Tallman was born on November 4, 1957, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. She is the daughter of Jerry Tallman, a radio entertainer. Tallman showed an early interest in acting, performing in summer stock at the Red Barn Theatre in Saugatuck, Michigan, at the age of 15. After graduating from Glenbard West High School in 1975, Tallman enrolled in the theater arts program at Carnegie Mellon University.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1979. While at Carnegie Mellon, Tallman performed in eighteen musicals at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. She also received an award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting. After graduating from college, Tallman moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. She landed her first professional role in the Broadway musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” in 1979.
