Pau Gasol Biography

Pau Gasol born as  Pau Gasol Sáez is a Spain professional basketball player, for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association. He is a six-time NBA All-star and a four-time All NBA selection, twice on the second team and twice on the third team. Gasol has won two NBA championships, both with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2002 with the Memphis Grizzlies and is one of only three non-American NBA players to have won that award. He is the older brother of fellow NBA player Marc Gasol. Gasol was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2001 NBA draft, but his rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

He holds the Grizzlies’ franchise record for free throws made and attempted. Following more than six seasons with Memphis, Gasol played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2008-2014, the Chicago Bulls from 2014-2016, and the San Antonio Spurs from 2016-2019.

On July 18, 2014, Gasol signed with the Chicago Bulls. On January 1, 2015, Gasol recorded a career-high 9 blocks, along with 17 points and 9 rebounds, in the 106–101 win over the Denver Nuggets. Ten days later, he scored a career-high 46 points on 17-of-30 shooting in a 95–87 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

On April 9, 2015, he recorded a league-best 51st double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds in an 89–78 win over the Miami Heat. He recorded his 54th double-double of the season in the regular season finale on April 15 against the Atlanta Hawks to finish as the league leader in double-doubles in 2014–15.

Pau Gasol Retire

He said he is not thinking of retiring anytime soon. In an interview, he commented saying, “In two summers, I might think about it a little more,” Gasol said. “It might be an option then, maybe. And maybe not because I love what I do. I work my ass off to do what I do at this stage, to keep up with the pace of the game and the progress and the development of the game today. I take pride in that. That’s what makes me who I am.”

Pau Gasol gave $2.5 million back to the Spurs in buyout

More information is coming out about the Spurs buyout agreement with Pau Gasol, who has signed with the league-leading Milwaukee Bucks. Under normal circumstances, the Spurs would owe him the remainder of this season’s salary plus the $6.7 million he is guaranteed next season, which would remain on their books unless they are able to trade those rights away.

However, Shams Charania of The Athletic is saying Gasol has given $2.5 million back to the Spurs in his buyout agreement to help them with cap space next season, meaning they will now only be on the hook for $4.2 million in 2019-20.
$2.5 million is not huge in today’s NBA, but it’s something. It may be the money the Spurs need to re-sign Rudy Gay (although they own his early bird rights) or the little boost they need to bring in more depth next season. It might even make the total amount owed to him low enough that someone else would be willing to trade for the cap hit (although I wouldn’t count on that). Regardless, it is certainly a generous and classy move on Gasol’s part.

The reality is he has been nothing but class the entire time he’s been here. He signed with the goal of helping the Spurs transition from the Tim Duncan era, and he did just that. He averaged 12.4 points and 8 rebounds while shooting over 50% from three for the 2016-17 Spurs squad that won 67 games and was possibly a Zaza Pachulia foot away from a championship. Gasol started the next season well before a shoulder injury robbed him of his production, and an early-season foot injury plus the rise of Jakob Poeltl sealed his fate as the third-stringer this season.

It was unfortunate timing for him, but his teammates want everyone to know what a consummate professional he was, never complaining and continuing to lead despite his reduced role. As Davis Bertans said:

“He never even complained in the locker room. Being in a tough situation, that was a really professional thing to do. Everybody knows that he wanted to play. It was obvious. The guy was working out every time he got a chance. We are going to miss him definitely. He was a great teammate, always helped everybody, a veteran with his experience. We only wish him the best.”

There are ways the Spurs can make even more of this generous move by Gasol, like using the stretch provision to spread out his remaining salary over the next three seasons, or they may just absorb the hit in one season and be completely free of it by 2020. Regardless, Gasol game to San Antonio with good intentions gave his all and left with class. His time here will always be appreciated, and we wish him nothing but the best as his Hall of Fame career winds down.

Pau Gasol saw his tenure with the San Antonio Spurs come to a close earlier this month.

Gasol and the franchise agreed to a contract buyout and the veteran big man then signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. Prior to Sunday’s game between the Bucks and Spurs, San Antonio elected to honor Gasol with a tribute video after his three seasons with the organization.

Entering Sunday’s contest, Gasol had appeared in just two of the possible four games with his new team. In a 117-98 win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, Gasol scored a point and secured five rebounds in 11 minutes.

In 27 games with the Spurs this season, Gasol has put together averages of 4.2 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 46.6 percent from the field. During the month of February, the veteran big man only logged 39 minutes for the Spurs and had fell out of the team’s frontcourt rotation. Gasol last played on Feb. 24 for the team against the New York Knicks when he grabbed five rebounds and dished out an assist in six minutes in a 130-118 Spurs defeat.

Gasol figures to offer more depth for a Bucks team that is currently the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee has really thrived under new head coach Mike Budenholzer and Gasol could play minutes behind the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez, and Nikola Mirotic in the team’s frontcourt.

The Spurs may not have been a tremendously long chapter, but the organization certainly went out of their way to honor Gasol.

The Spurs ruin Pau Gasol’s homecoming

Even though it’s been only a week since Pau Gasol signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, he returned to San Antonio in a sort of homecoming. He made time at the end of the Spurs victory over his new team to hug LaMarcus Aldridge, and DeMar DeRozan while Bryn Forbes and Derrick White came across the court to show their respect.

Not that Spurs fans should expect any less from the Spanish center who offered back $2.5M while being released to join a team who could offer more playing time. And play he did. Fifteen minutes, hitting a spot on 3 as has become his custom over the last three seasons. He also pulled down 3 rebounds while sparring with his compadre LMA.

The post-game embracing serves a reminder that it is just a game after all. Players come and go, but the mutual admiration these men have for one another while playing at this level is clear in these moments.

Just nice to see Spursy behavior no matter what jersey that Spur is wearing.
