Pentatonix Early Career | Beginnings
Pentatonix is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas. The group was founded by three childhood friends Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi and Kristin Maldonado at the age of 10. The three began as a young a cappella trion called The Trio. The group has been characterized by their pop-style arrangements with high profile vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion and beatboxing.
They released their debut EP PTX Volume 1 in 2012 where it was followed by their holiday release PTXmas in the same year among others. PTX Vol II peaked number 1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart and number 10 on the Billboard 200 in 2013. From there the group became well known and later on won three Grammy Awards.
The first one was the first a cappella act to win Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella both in 2015 and 2016. The second was the Best Duo/Group Performance in 2017. The five-membered band began with Kristie, Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying while they were still in high school at Martin High School in Arlington Texas.
They were auditioning for the local radio show competition to meet the cast of Glee where they submitted the Trio version of Telephone by Lady Gaga and Beyonce which gained attention on YouTube. From they decided to add Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusalo into the band to make it more appealing. They went on to audition for The reality TV Show the Sing-off where they won became the music legends of all time.
