Phil Balsley Statler Brothers
Balsley was a member of The Statler Brothers group which was started in 1955 and sang gospel and country music. The band’s name came after a facial tissue brand they had found in a hotel room (they joked they might have turned out to be the Kleenex Brothers).
The Statler Brothers consisted of four founders. Don Reid sang the lead; Harold Reid, Don’s older brother, sang the bass; Phil Balsley sang the baritone, and Lew DeWitt sang the tenor and was the Statlers ‘ guitarist before being replaced by Jimmy Fortune in 1983 because of DeWitt’s illness.
DeWitt continued to perform as a solo artist until his demise on August 15, 1990, from heart and kidney disease. The Statler Brothers is an award-winning band that between 1955 and 2002 delighted people with entertaining songs.
