In 2000, he lost hearing in his left ear due to a viral infection, it was resolved after the infection was cured. In September 2009, it was announced that he could no longer play the drums, due to an operation to repair a dislocated vertebrae in his neck. He personally said on the Genesis band website that, there was no drama regarding his disability and playing drums. During the last Genesis tour, he dislocated some vertebrae in his upper neck and that affected his hands.
After a successful operation on his neck, his hands still couldn’t function normally, it was impossible for him to play drums or piano. In 2010, he stated in an interview that he had thought of commiting suicide, but resisted for the sake of his children. In 2016, he acknowledged that he had struggled with an alcohol problem following his retirement and third divorce, he also stated in the book that he had been sober for three years.
On 8 June 2017, he postpone two planned tours, as a result of a back operation which makes it difficult to walk. He slipped in his hotel room, on his way to the toilet in the night, hitting his head in the fall on a chair. He had stitches for a severe gash on his head close to his eye.
