Ralph Barbieri Career
Barbieri was a stringer for Sport magazine before joining KNBR in 1984 to host his own sports talk show. He was teamed up with Tolbert, a former NBA player, in 1996. Barbieri’s nickname is “The Razor” because of his raspy voice, thought by some listeners to resemble the electric razor of a barber and his “no-nonsense” approach to interviews. The nickname, which may also have been inspired by the resemblance of his surname to “barber,” was given to him by long-time San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen.
Barbieri renewed his four-year contract with KNBR in 2007 through November 2011. Barbieri was known to end his show with a quote from Gilbert K. Chesterton, “Angels fly because they take themselves lightly.”
On April 11, 2012, KNBR let go of the 66-year-old Barbieri. KNBR’s parent company, Cumulus Media, said he “refused to honor some of the most basic terms of his contract.” Barbieri’s legal team cited age discrimination and disability discrimination at termination. Barbieri had revealed earlier in 2011 that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2005.
Ralph Barbieri Health | Ralph Barbieri Parkinson’s
On February 15th, 2006, Barbieri was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Barbieri did not disclose this diagnosis to his superiors as he was afraid of adverse employment consequences. However, he did confide in his radio partner, Tom Tolbert. Eventually, on May 19th, 2011, and August 2nd, 2011, he did tell all of the defendants. The disabilities have never in any way prevented Barbieri from performing the essential duties of the job, which he did until the day he was wrongfully terminated on April 10th, 2012. In fact, his partner of 15 years, Tom Tolbert, upon hearing of Barbieri’s termination stated “he is still as energetic as ever.
In September 2010, Barbieri learned he had Diabetes II. He did not tell anyone at the workplace. According to the suit, Lew Dickey told Barbieri he could count on having his job at least until Barbieri’s son completed his education.
After disclosing his disabilities, Barbieri claims KNBR and its owner, Cumulus Media Inc., refused to renew his four-year contract, instead of going with “a one-year agreement, with a three-month probationary period and a substantial pay cut, of approximately 1/3 of his previous earnings. Barbieri takes 81 pills a day. In April 2012, the station wrongfully terminated him. Barbieri filed suit against KNBR, saying the station fired him because of his age and disabilities.
Ralph Barbieri Sues KNBR
Longtime San Francisco sports talk host Ralph Barbieri is suing Cumulus Media’s sports talk outlet KNBR claiming the station fired him in April based on his age and disabilities. Barbieri’s attorney tells the San Francisco Chronicle station officials told Barbieri he was being let go for coming to work late and not preparing.
Barbieri had co-hosted the PM drive show with Tom Tolbert since 1996 as “The Razor and Mr. T” and attorney Angela Alioto says, “If you look at the ratings, Mr. Barbieri and Mr. Tolbert were number one or two until the day he was terminated. The fact is, before they knew he was sick, those excuses didn’t exist – and they renewed his contract.” In late 2011, Barbieri announced he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and the station renewed his contract a month later.
Barbieri, who is seeking $10 million in damages, went on crosstown sports talk outlet KGMZ-FM to explain the suit and said Cumulus market manager Bill Bungeroth and OM Lee Hammer expressed to him he sounded tired on the air and chastised him for having to use the restroom often because of his medications. He says he was also criticized for being late because of medical appointments. The Chronicle reports Cumulus Media has not responded to requests for comment.

Some guests admit to cheating, refuse to answer one or more of Barbieri’s questions or stop the test entirely, and confess on video. During the show, Maury reveals the results of the lie detector tests. Barbieri occasionally appears on the show to explain the results, often saying a person had “significant reactions” to one or more questions.
