Since childhood, Gregory was active in sports. Therefore, he attended Hamilton Southeastern High School located in Fishers, Indiana. Gregory was a two-sport star, excelling in football and basketball.

Gregory had several offers from universities to go play basketball but he opted to go with the football. Gregory recorded big numbers in football while playing as a junior(92 tackles and 17 sacks). Randy was ranked among the top 15 players in the Indiana State after his senior season.

Randy went to Arizona Western College from 2011-12. In his freshman year, he recorded 82 tackles and 9 sacks. Due to a broken leg, he missed the 2012 season. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln after failing to meet the academic requirements of Purdue University.

During his first year at Nebraska, he played in 13 games, starting in 10. He recorded 64 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and one interception that he subsequently returned for a touchdown. His 10.5 sacks were the first in the Big Ten Conference.

On the 26th of December, Gregory was activated from his suspension. This was before a game week 16 match against the Detroit Lions. As his yearlong suspension was not in place at the time, he was able to make his debut for the 2016 season.
