Regan Smith is an American swimmer who is the current world record holder for both a 100- and 200-meter (long course) backstroke for women. She has a third world record as part of a 4 x 100 Medley Relay for women in the USA.
She set several new age-group records when Smith was twelve and won awards at high school state meetings. Following those successes, she joined the Riptide Swim Club in Apple Valley and started to receive coaching from Mike Parratto, known for coaching Jenny Thompson, a famous swimmer who won twelve Olympic medals.
Smith played at meetings with Olympians including Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky when she was fourteen. In 2016 she was elected a citizen of the United States. National Junior Team and set records in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, and 100-meter backstroke for the national age group. Among 13–14 year-olds she was named the 2016 Age Group Swimmer of the Year.
In July 2017, at age 15, Smith competed at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in her first major international meeting. She qualified for the final 200-meter female backstroke event and placed 8th.In August, Smith won the 100-m backstroke gold medals and the 200-m backstroke in the 2017 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships. She broke the 15-16 national age group record for Missy Franklin in the 100 m finals, as well as the world junior record previously set by Taylor Ruck in the semis. She was awarded the 2017 National Age Group Swimmer of the Year for ages 15–16.
Smith won her first senior international medal the following year by taking bronze in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo. Smith set a new world junior record at the 2018 U.S. Swimming Championships when she and Kathleen Baker (at the time the 100-m backstroke world record holder) tied for the first time in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:06.433. Smith also finished third in both the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter butterfly. She finished in 2018 with the title of Age Group Swimmer of the Year for the third time in her career and for the second consecutive time in the age group (15–16 year-olds).

Smith competed in one individual event, the 200-meter backstroke, at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Smith declared herself as the favorite in heats and semifinals. Smith posted a 2:06.01 time in the heats, breaking her own Junior record. Smith charged off the rest of the field in the semifinals and opened up a lead of two body lengths in the last 25 meters. With a time of 2:03.35, Smith hit the wall breaking Missy Franklin’s world record of 2:04.06, which had stood since 2012.
