    Regina Taylor Actress and Playwright

Regina wrote Escape From Paradise which is a one-woman show that was produced at the Goodman Theatre Studio, Chicago, in October 1995. Her other short plays Watermelon Rinds and Inside the Belly of the Beast were incorporated into a program at the Goodman Theatre Studio in 1994.

A play she had written and appeared in, Millennium Mambo, a one-woman work was presented at the Goodman Theatre in February 2000. This work included short pieces by playwrights Adrienne Kennedy, Ntozake Shange, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Kia Corthron. She also wrote the play, A Night in Tunisia which premiered during the 2000 Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

Regina, in 2000,  won a best new play award from the American Critics’ Association for Oo-Bla-Dee, a play about 1940s female jazz musicians.

She also wrote and directed Crowns, a co-production of the McCarter Theatre, where it premiered in October 2002, and the Second Stage Theatre, produced in December 2002. Regina also wrote and directed an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull titled Drowning Crow, which was produced on Broadway in February 2004 by the Manhattan Theatre Club at the Biltmore Theatre, directed by Marion McClinton.

In addition, she also wrote and directed  The Dreams of Sarah Breedlove, which is a dramatic rendering of the financial gains and emotional losses of African-American businesswoman Madam C.J. Walker.

    Regina Taylor Crowns

Crowns is a musical written and directed by Regina and is a co-production of the McCarter Theatre. Crown is a coming-of-age story about a 17-year-old girl, Yolanda who is on a self-destructive path running the mean Englewood streets of Chicago.

Her mother sends her down south to live with her Grandma Shaw after her brother is shot
and killed. Her grandma Shaw, introduces her to her circle of “Hat Queens”(each
woman owns at least one hundred hats).

Yolanda tells her story in a mix of hip-hop and spoken word. Her sound is mixed
with the gospel, jazz, blues, R&B, and other idioms of the women who become a part of
her life. Yolanda, at first, thinks these women have nothing in common – thinks “Joy
Luck Club” or “The Secret Life of Bees”- as this community joins together to save
    Yolanda’s life.

Each of their hats holds a story of a wedding, funeral, or baptism as they share their
stories of how they moved through life’s struggles. They then baptize Yolanda in
history/memory and Yolanda realizes she’s not alone in her feelings. She recognizes that hats aren’t just a fashion statement. They are testimonies of sisterhood and they are hard-earned Crowns.

Yolanda returns to Chicago with new eyes and she now can see better, where she’s from, who she is and where she’s going.
