Richard began his entrepreneurial career in the energy business as an attorney with Florida Gas Transmission (which eventually became Enron Corporation) after a series of mergers. He was a friend to Kenneth Lay, Its founder, in college. Richard served as its president and COO from 1990 to December 1996. In 1996, Richard resigned from Enron to start a new pipeline company alongside a college friend named William V. Morgan.
