Richard Knabb National Hurricane Center
National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb’s last day reached and he resigned in March to take a job with The Weather Channel. While on his speculation he has been on his departure that may have something to do with concerns over the new administration and possible budget cuts, he says that’s not so.
“Politics has absolutely nothing to do with it,” Knabb said at the National Hurricane Conference in New Orleans. “Administrations have changed many, many times in the history of the National Hurricane Center and during my decade and a half total working at the center we’ve had many different administrations and we have continued to do our job as we always do.”
Knabb said it was more an issue with not having to travel as much and spend more time with his family. Former FEMA administrator Craig Fugate wasn’t happy that Knabb resigned but said both FEMA and the hurricane center are in good hands with experienced interim directors.
“They have a great batch of forecasters at the hurricane center, and we worked diligently in FEMA to build up the team so when we left, they were well-staffed and managed,” Fugate said. “The big thing for Florida this time of year is if you live in Florida, you have a hurricane problem.”

As NHC Director, he oversaw the hurricane center team during severe weather events including Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016
