Career
Prior to joining the American rock and roll band Aerosmith, Dufay released the album ‘Tender Loving Abuse,’ which was produced by Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas. When Brad Whitford left the band in 1980, Douglas suggested Dufay fill the vacancy.
It is safe to say that Dufay was crucial in keeping the band from going out of business. The band was going through a rough patch in the early 1980s, with their lead rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford leaving and their main vocalist Steven Taylor succumbing to drug addiction.
Dufay joined the band after their album ‘Rock in a Hard Place’ was released, and he appeared in their video ‘Lightning Strikes.’ He offered his assistance to the ailing Steven Tyler and suggested that the band reunite with its former members.
He suggested Whitford rejoin the band, which he eventually did in 1984. Dufay later left the band and went on to work with the band ‘Blue By Nature,’ alongside vocalist Karen Lawrence. He then released his second album, ‘Written In Stone,’ which included an outtake from Aerosmith’s ‘Written In Stone.’
Dufay’s career never recovered after his time with Aerosmith came to an end. He did post some solo covers on his personal websites and collaborated with other artists’ works, but he was unable to re-establish his reputation.
During Aerosmith’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech in 2001, Perry recognized Dufay’s contribution to the band and his selflessness in getting the band back on track. Perry also admitted that, while Dufay’s selflessness saved the band from obscurity, it was “suicidal” for his own career.
