Robert Bryson Biography
Robert Bryson was a chronometer and clockmaker in Edinburgh. He received the Royal Warrant as Watch and Clock Maker to Queen Victoria. He made a rolling black clock (Congreve clock) in 1804, four years before the design was patented by William Congreve. It is on display in Edinburgh, at the national museum of Scotland.
He had a wife by the name of Janet Gillespie who was born in the year 1788 on August 25 and died on 8 August 1858, and they got married on 29 December 1815 in the parish of North Leith.
They both had children; four sons and two daughters: Alexander Bryson who was born in 1816 and died in 1866, William Gillespie Bryson who was born in 1818 and died in 1906, Robert who followed him into the watch and clock business and became amongst other things, Master of the Merchant Company, and married Mary Ann Braund Box and was buried in Warriston Cemetry.
The other three children were Margaret Muir Bryson who was born in 1821 and died in 1873, James Mackay Bryson who was born in 1824 and died in 1894 and the last one as Helen Cockburn Bryson was born in 1826 and died in the year 1912.
He died on 8th August 1852 and was buried in New Calton Cemetry together with his wife, Jane, son Alexander and other family members.
