Robert Gant Career and Education
Gant began acting in television commercials in Florida at the age of ten and became a member of the Screen Actors Guild at the age of eleven. In Tampa, Florida, Gant studied tap and jazz dance with the American Musical Theatre Company.
He performed a soft-shoe routine with comedian Bob Hope at MacDill Air Force Base as part of Hope’s USO tour. Gant majored in English literature at the University of Pennsylvania, with concentrations in Shakespeare and poetry.
He appeared in musicals, such as Little Shop of Horrors’ Dentist and The Mystery of Edwin Drood’s Neville Landless, and acted in the school’s Penn Film Foundation film Movements.
Gant earned his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in 1993. Gant was also a member of the Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society, in which he appeared in several productions.
Gant founded The MetroGnomes, a six-man cappella group that performed in venues throughout Washington, D.C. Gant accepted a position with the Chicago-based international law firm Baker McKenzie’s Los Angeles office.
When the firm’s Los Angeles office closed a few months later, Gant decided to pursue his lifelong dream of acting and performing. Gant is best known for his role as Professor Ben Bruckner in Showtime’s Queer as Folk.

Gant played Melissa Benoist’s Kryptonian father Zor-El in Supergirl, Todd Crimsen in 13 Reasons Why, and Jim Hunter in The Fosters and its spin-off series Good Trouble. Prior to Queer as Folk, Gant appeared in Ryan Murphy’s first television series, Popular, as Principal Calvin Krupps, and as Caroline’s boyfriend Trevor in Caroline in the City.
Gant has appeared as a guest star on Friends, where he played one of two men Phoebe was dating at the same time, as well as Melrose Place, Becker, several CSI-related shows, and Criminal Minds.
Gant starred in Billy’s Dad is a Fudgepacker, a short film homage to 1950s educational films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. Gant was a series regular in the BBC 3-produced drama Personal Affairs in 2005, which was set in London’s financial sector and filmed on location in both London and Scotland.
In an otherwise all-British cast, Robert was the only American. In 2013, he portrayed Captain Robert Norton in Dead Space 3, the third installment in Electronic Arts’ popular Dead Space video game series. Gant was a co-producer with the production company Mythgarden.
