He grew up with his two siblings, Sean Pecknold, and Aja Pecknold. Pecknold is the youngest of three children. In 1905, Pecknold’s maternal great-grandfather, Theodor Valaas, immigrated to Seattle from Norway. His father, Greg, played in the Seattle-based soul band known as The Fathoms in the 1960s and has since operated as a film editor.
Pecknold wrote his first song at the age of 14, “Sarah Jane,” about a runaway who turns to prostitution. He released that song along with six others under the nickname Robin Noel Vaas, on a demo CD named St. Vincent Street near his hometown. In 2005, Pecknold toured with Seattle’s Dolour, playing bass, before starting Fleet Foxes with his childhood friend Skyler Skjelset in 2006.
