Joey Feek was an American country music singer and songwriter who was born in Joey Marie Feek (née Martin). The couple Joey and Rory comprised her and her husband, Rory Feek from 2008 to 2016.
Joey underwent a second surgery to remove a 3-inch tumor, recurrence of cervical cancer that had invaded her colon and surrounding structures in July 2015. The surgery was long as well as involved and required the use of inter-operative radiation as there were tumors the surgeon could not get clear margins on.
Still, the medical team was hopeful for Joey’s situation, and she recovered from surgery to continue on to endure an intense round of radiation and chemo in the summer of the year 2015.
While undergoing treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Joey would record hymns in their hotel room for the last CD the couple would create together, Hymns That Are Important to Us.
Rory disclosed in a blog post that Joey’s cancer was terminal, and they were stopping all treatment as the chemo and radiation she had suffered through for the last few months were not working in October 2015.
The MRI “scans disclosed that two quarter-sized tumors have already grown back in the same area that they had been blasting daily with chemo and radiation and that many smaller tumors were visible all throughout the abdominal region. She said that the cancer was aggressively spreading”.
There were no more treatment options available and all there was left to do was keep Joey as comfortable as possible for the time she had left. By November 2015 Joey was in hospice care, In January 2016, her morphine dose needed to keep the cancer pain under control had quadrupled.
She was able to celebrate Indiana’s second birthday as well as Valentine’s Day with her and Rory, see them receive a Grammy nomination for the song “If I Needed You”, and see and hear the final recording the duo would make together, an album of hymns that Joey had always wanted to make.
It debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 when it was released, and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 3 weeks after its release. She died on March 4, 2016, and Rory held a private funeral on their farm in Tennessee; Joey was buried in the family cemetery on the Feek farm.

Rory Feek Career
Inspired by Don Williams, Merle Haggard, and other artists, Feek started playing guitar at the age of 15 years old. He later worked two tours of duty in the United States Marine Corps after high school, prior to moving to Dallas, Texas, where he performed in nightclubs.
Feek moved to Nashville, Tennessee in the year 1995 after being encouraged to by Nashville entertainment attorney Rod Phelps, as well as signed to a publishing contract. One of his first single releases as a songwriter was Collin Raye’s “Someone You Used to Know”, a Top Five country hit in the year 1999.
One year later Clay Walker reached Top Five and with “The Chain of Love”, another song that Feek co-wrote.
Feek went on to write for other artists in the year 2000s, including album tracks for Mark Wills, Kenny Chesney, Terri Clark, Randy Travis, and Lorrie Morgan and Tracy Byrd’s 2003 single “The Truth About Men”.
Feek achieved his first Number One as a songwriter when Blake Shelton topped the country charts with “Some Beach”, which he co-wrote alongside Paul Overstreet in the year 2004. Also in the same year, he founded the Giantslayer Records label, on which Blaine Larsen recorded two studio albums in association with BNA Records.
Feek alongside his wife, Joey Martin Feek, founded a duo called Joey + Rory in the year 2008. They came in third place on the CMT talent show Can You Duet, as well as later that year, signed to a recording contract with Vanguard Records.
