Rosey Grier was born Roosevelt Grier on July 14, 1932, in Cuthbert, Georgia. He was one of twelve children born to sharecropper parents. Grier’s family moved to Roselle, New Jersey, when he was a child. He attended Abraham Clark High School, where he was a star athlete in football, track and field, and wrestling.
After graduating from high school, Grier enrolled at Pennsylvania State University on a football scholarship. He played for the Nittany Lions from 1951 to 1954 and was a two-time All-American. He also won the IC4A and Penn Relays shot put and discus championships in 1955.
After college, Grier was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1955 NFL draft. He played for the Giants for eight seasons and was a member of the Fearsome Foursome, one of the greatest defensive lines in NFL history. In 1963, Grier was traded to the Los Angeles Rams, where he played for four seasons. He retired from professional football in 1967.
