Nelson was born on September 9, 1924, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the second of five children born to Marion C. and Edna Anderson Nelson. Nelson’s father was a reporter for the Deseret News and later became general manager of Gillham Advertising, Utah’s earliest advertising agency. His mother was a homemaker.
Nelson attended public schools in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School in 1941 as the valedictorian of his class. He then enrolled at the University of Utah, where he studied chemistry and zoology. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945.
Nelson then attended the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he graduated first in his class with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1947. He then served as an intern and surgical resident at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1951, he received a Ph.D. in surgery from the University of Minnesota.

Nelson is a religious leader and retired surgeon who is the 17th and current president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He was born on September 9, 1924, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nelson received his medical degree from the University of Utah in 1945 and his Ph.D. in surgery from the University of Minnesota in 1951. He then served in the United States Army Medical Corps during the Korean War.
After returning from the war, Nelson joined the University of Utah School of Medicine faculty, where he eventually became chairman of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. He was a pioneer in heart surgery and developed the heart-lung machine, which is used to perform open-heart surgery. Nelson also served in a number of leadership positions in the LDS Church.
He was called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1984 and to the First Presidency in 2015. He became president of the church in January 2018.
