Ryan Murphy is a competitive American swimmer specialized in backstroke and a three-time Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in the 100-meter men’s backstroke (long course).
Murphy won the first foreign medals of his career of 2011, both in the backstroke of 200 meters. Murphy won a bronze medal in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2011 World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima with a time of 1:59.63. Murphy also won another bronze in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2011 Pan American Games. He recorded a time of 1:58.50, in the final. Murphy skipped the Olympic team at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials, qualifying for the 2012 Olympics, by finishing sixth in the 100-meter backstroke (53.92) and fourth in the 200-meter backstroke (1:57.39).
Following the Olympics, Murphy competed in Istanbul at the 2012 World Short Course Championships, where he won a bronze and gold medal. His bronze came with a time of 1:48.86 in the 200-meter backstroke, finishing behind Radosław Kawęcki and Ryan Lochte. Murphy also won a gold medal for his participation in the heats in the 4-meter medley relay, swimming the backstroke leg with a time of 50.91.
Murphy had just missed qualifying for the 2013 World Aquatics Championships at the 2013 U.S. National Championships by finishing third in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke, respectively with 53.38 and 1:56.37 times. In 2014, Murphy won their first NCAA D1 Swimming Championships with the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes. His 100 backstroke time of 44.78 was US 17–18 National Age Group (NAG) record and his 200 backstroke time of 1:37.23 broke the NCAA record of Tyler Clary in addition to the record of 17–18 NAG. He also finished 8th in 200 IM and swam on 200 and 400 medley and freestyle relay from Cal on the way to winning the team championship from Cal.

Ryan Murphy World Championships
