Aurelia Nxumalo: I’m a 23 year young (hehe) God fearing lady born in Newcastle and bred in Durban, the eldest of four children from my parents who still reside in Newcastle. I am currently in the final year of my Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree through UNISA. I work full-time for an Actuary firm which awarded me my current study bursary. I have been involved with various charities since high school but now much more hands on, I have always been a huminaterian at heart and now have the opportunity to put that into practice.
I was raised by my grandparents who have worked for everything they have now but never forgot to give back. I thank them for grooming to be the person I am today and installing the values that I live by. I believe that we can all help the less fortunate in one way or the other. Its very easy to help by giving money but its worth more to give your time to those people, even if its something as simple as just listening. I feel that we are blessed to be blessings, so spread the love.
PMP: How and when did the love for modelling come about?
Aurelia Nxumalo: Wow, Believe it or not I was extremely shy growing up, so I joined modelling and drama school to break out of my shell and thats when i fell in love with modelling. Its been a growing passion since then from the little pageants to graduating to the next level of the modelling courses.
PMP: What does your job entail and what do you enjoy most about it?
Aurelia Nxumalo: Everyday is a working progress and no day is ever the same. Mostly office admin at this point but enjoy the people I work with they are such a great team and constantly learning from them everyday. I am incredibly blessed with a great working environment. I will only get into what I am studying once I have completed my studies! Can’t wait!!
PMP: I’ve noticed that you are running for Miss Earth South Africa 2012 and the charity work you have done is exceptional and deserves praise…tell us more on your involvement?
Aurelia Nxumalo: Wow, where do I start…Miss Earth South Africa in association with Consol is not merely a pageant but rather a leadership programme for young woman who have a passion for a greener tomorrow and creating better tomorrow for the less fortunate. I am honoured to be part of such an organisation which stands for what I believe in and respect the work that they do. I am currently in the Top 18 as a National Finalist for Miss Earth SA in association with Consol, the final Gala event will be held on the 25th August 2012 in Johannesburg. Leading up to the contest, I have been involved in a number of projects, such as teaching at primary schools on bean planting in a glass as well as tree planting in various schools.
Also managed to get Johannesburg City Parks to sponsor about 40 trees for 4 schools in Soweto, which were planted during the Youth Day celebrations, where I worked very closely with Cheesekids in beautifying the schools in Soweto. It has been such an amazing journey thus far and have enjoyed every minute of it. (you can just imagine the amount of multi-tasking that i have to do but I LOVE IT). I have managed to perform very well in all aspects of my life and would never wish to waste my God given purpose.
PMP: Do you have an educational background for the work that you do or is it just a natural skill?
Aurelia Nxumalo: In terms of the voluntary community work, no formal education but just the love to lend a helping hand. ‘My day to day job was a blessing that fell through in a time when I needed it most and working towards my future as an attorney, well thats an on-going process at this point.
PMP: Characteristics important for doing what you do?
Aurelia Nxumalo: You have to be strong hey. You will get a lot of people who will try and bring you down. I’ve been through the vicious rumours and ridiculous stories but what matters is that you get through those and never lose yourself. Love God and never lose faith in what you believe in because the people that matter know you and those that don’t matter, wish they knew you (hahahahahaha). Love what you do and do what you love. Live for you!!!
PMP: Do you think looks play a vital role in this business?
Aurelia Nxumalo: LOL. hmmmmm. well every job/work has its prerequisites and sadly in modelling most of what you do will be based on your looks, as fickle as that may sound. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so what if im the beholder?! ahahahaha PMP: Your career highlights and where do you see yourself in 6-12months time?
A: Modeling career highlights, would have to be winning 2 pageants in one week, namely Miss Suncoast and Miss Vodacom Easter Adrenaline (it was SUPER AWESOME).
In 6 months it would be the end of the year and I would have only 6 months left of my LLB and be positioned for Miss Earth South Africa and in 12 months I would be a Law Graduate working towards my Attorney admission exams!!! Yess thats all I’m really working towards.
PMP: Advice for aspiring women aspiring to enter such pegeants?
Aurelia Nxumalo: GO FOR IT!!! Fear is the devil and never got anybody anywhere. Take that leap of faith, do whatever you dream to do and do it properly.
Enter as many pageants or competitions as you can because practice makes perfect.
There will be rejections but thats life, pick yourself up and keep on keeping on!!
PMP: If the letter ‘W’ from the word WOMAN stood for, Wars…what wars do you fight everyday as a young South African woman.
Aurelia Nxumalo: There are far too many! But the one that sticks out for me would still be male domination in the business world as well as gender based discrimination. We live in diverse society where views will always differ but the struggle continues.
