Dr Tumi Biography
Dr Tumi Tumisang Makweya is an award winning gospel artist and and a family doctor born on 10th July 1981. He was born and brought up in Seshego, Limpopo Province of South Africa. He is the last of six children of a priest and a teacher.
He started singing as a young boy in church and discovered his passion for medicine early on in life. He played the keyboard and sang as he grew up. While studying at Medunsa he and others sharing his passion formed groups and sang.
After graduating at the end of 2006 from Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa) where he studied medicine, he entered the public health sector and worked as a doctor, but the long hours, stringent rules, and need to follow orders from his bosses stifled him. He took over the Mabopane offices and has worked hard at his calling since, making house visits to his patients and offering them a service that has only entrenched him in their lives.
A former lead singer for award winning gospel group – Intense, Dr Tumi composed all the songs for the group’s album – Heart2Heart, save one. He also wrote all 16 tracks of his debut album – Heart of a King, which won Best RnB Gospel Award at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards in 2012, where he was also nominated in four categories.
Dr Tumi’s inspiration for song writing is derived from fellowship, the word and experiences in his day to day journey with the Lord. His songs transcend generations, cultures and times as they are riddled with the word, which is always in season. Dr Tumi reveals that song is the primary language that connects him with the Giver of gifts, who has endowed him with unparalleled song writing abilities.
Dr Tumi is fast becoming a sought after songwriter for contemporary gospel. He has written songs for a number of gospel artists in South Africa. Dr Tumi, who is also a medical doctor, wants his word based prophetic songs to change lives by ministering healing, inspiration, hope, new meaning, revival and experience of God on another dimension. So anointed are Dr Tumi’s song that he is often inundated with testimonies from those whose lives are touched and impacted by the richness of the substance found in his songs. Like many artists, Dr Tumi, who is a producer, songwriter, instrumentalist and vocalist, kicked off his music career in Sunday school decades ago. Dr Tumi talks about his historical sweep at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards, singing to his wife – and what’s next
The popular gospel star has had a great showing at almost all the award ceremonies this year

He capped it all with an historic nine nominations at the 9th SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards.
Shortly after his six wins, including Best Gospel Artist and Best Gospel Album, we got to chat to him.
You’ve already had a good showing at the Ingomas and Mzansi Christian Awards, but did you see the nine Crown Gospel Awards nominations coming?
Dr Tumi: It came at the right time, but we were hoping to get even more. Every category we were nominated for we believed we met the requirements – but we were truly humbled to be nominated for all nine awards.
How have the awards changed your life?
Dr Tumi: I’m grateful for the recognition of the hard work that we’ve put in. I believe winning these awards is encouraging because people can see what you are doing.
Did you prepare an acceptance speech?
Dr Tumi: No, I decided I’d speak from my heart.
That being said, who do you make a point of thanking when you do win?
Dr Tumi: My whole family. My whole family pulls through for me.
The plan is to call as many names as possible.
Did the success of Love and Grace shock you?
Dr Tumi: No, I wasn’t really shocked. We put a lot of work into the project and our expectation was always that it would do really well.
Considering that the album speaks about God’s love and grace, it had to be seen in action.

30,000 WORSHIPPERS GATHER WITH ONE HEART AT DR TUMI CONCERT
Dr Tumi, popular for record hits such as ‘Nothing Without You’ and the ‘Jesus Song,’ held the second annual Gathering of Worshippers at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria on 1 September.
JOHANNESBURG – Over 30,000 people gathered in Pretoria for the live DVD recording of one of South Africa’s most successful gospel artists.
Dr Tumi, popular for record hits such as Nothing Without You and the Jesus Song, held the second annual Gathering of Worshippers at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria on 1 September.
Last year, he filled Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg at the inaugural Gathering of Worshippers. He has since released the live CD and DVD recording of the concert.
With a high tech stage, impressive lighting and effects, he thrilled his audience with a selection of songs that were both comforting and rousing.
Joining Dr Tumi on stage were South Africa’s first Idols winner, Heinz Winckler and Lungi Ndala, among other supporting acts who belted out their hits.
“God was healing people as we worshipped. Glory be to God. I am both touched and moved by the support from everybody who attended. God was with us. Part of the success of the event was partnering with churches and getting over 300 churches involved in the campaign leading up to #GOW2018,” he says of the event’s success.
He has now set his sights on the third edition of the concert for 2019.
“Truly the sky is the limit. I dream of bigger stages and bigger audiences to spread the Gospel and worship with fellow believers. I’m encouraged by the success of GOW2018 and I know that 2019 will only be massive. God is with us.”
