Sipho Pityana Biography
Sipho Pityana is the Executive Chairman of Izingwe Capital Limited in Sandton and an Advisor for the Labour Relations Council and the Ministry of Education. Mr Pityana is also a Consultant on the Forum of Vice-Chancellors of Historically Black University, as well as an Advisor for the Science and Technology Initiative.
Mr Pityana holds a BA. (Hons) in Government and Sociology from University of Essex, an M.Sc. in Politics and Sociology from the University of London and a D Tech (Honorary) VUT has a strong record of involvement in academia including his tenure as the Academic Registrar and Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare. In 1992 he published a book “Beyond the factory floor” the first ever survey of COSATU shop stewards.
Mr Pityana joined the private sector in 2002 as an Executive Director: Nedcor Investment Bank. He serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of Munich Re-Insurance, Director of Anglo Gold Ashanti, Afrox, Scaw South Africa and Aberdare Cables. He is also the founder and Chairman of Izingwe Capital – a black owned investment company group. He is a member of various business organisations including Business Leadership South Africa.
Sipho Pityana has extensive business experience having served in both an executive and non-executive capacity on several JSE listed boards of companies as well as running his own companies, Izingwe Capital and Izingwe Holdings, which he chairs. He is chairman of the JSE-listed Onelogix Group, he is also the chairman of the University of Cape Town Council. He has previously served as chair of Munich Reinsurance of Africa, he also served on the boards of Bytes Technology Group, Afrox, SPESCOM, Scaw Metals Group and the Old Mutual Leadership Group. He previously worked as an executive director of Nedcor Investment Bank and managing director of Nedbank.
In addition to his private sector track record, Sipho has extensive public sector experience and international exposure. He was the first Director General of the Department of Labour in the former President Mandela’s Government. As the Foreign Affairs Director General he represented South Africa in various international fora including the United Nations, African Union, Commonwealth and the International Labour Organization. He was one of the founding members of the governing body of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration and Convenor of the South African government delegation to the National Economic Development and Labour Council. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution as well as Millennium Labour Council.
