Cisneros was born on December 20, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She attended Loyola University Chicago in 1976 and was awarded a bachelor of arts degree, later she obtained a master of fine arts degree from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1978.
Five years after obtaining her MFA, Sandra went back to Loyola University-Chicago, where she had previously acquired a BA in English, to work as an administrative assistant. Before this job, she worked in Pilsen and Little Village, mostly Mexican neighborhoods, in Chicago, and taught high school dropouts at Latino Youth High School.

The first book Cisneros published was a short book of poetry called Bad Boys in 1980. Four years later, she published a fiction novel called The House on Mango Street in 1984. This book would go on to become one of her most famous writings. This made Cisneros earn fame.
