Sania Mirza began playing tennis at the age of six. She was trained by her father and went on to win 10 singles and 13 doubles titles as a junior player, including the 2003 Wimbledon Championships and the 2003 Afro-Asian Games.
She won her first WTA doubles title at the 2004 AP Tourism Hyderabad Open, thereby becoming the first-ever Indian woman to achieve the feat. That year, she won six ITF singles titles. Due to her phenomenal performance in the 2005 season, she was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year.
