Serge Gnabry Career
His former club VfB Stuttgart agreed to a deal with Premier League side Arsenal. He officially joined Arsenal for the season. He was then promoted to the reserves after impressive displays. The season started off well for him after he was called up to the Arsenal first team for a pre-season friendly against FC Köln.
He made his Premier League debut win, and he became Arsenal’s second-youngest player in the league’s history after Jack Wilshere. He scored a late equalizer against Chelsea in the semi-finals of the competition, He scored his first professional goal in the next league match against Swansea City to lead Arsenal to a victory and leave them top of the Premier League table. His impressive start to the season resulted in a nomination for the Golden Boy Award.
He got a serious knee injury and this made him miss a lot in that season. He joined West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan to gain first-team experience and made his debut as a substitute to defeat to Chelsea. Later, the coach wanted to extend his contract at Arsenal before his move, but a lack of first-team opportunities meant that the midfielder sought a move elsewhere. He was presented as a Bayern Munich player and was assigned the jersey number 22.
He represented Germany at various youth levels and was part of the U21 team which won the European Under-21 Championship. He was selected to participate in the next Olympic Games. He received his first call-up to the German senior team.
Serge Gnabry says that his heart wanted to stay with Arsenal, but he felt it was the logical decision to leave and return to his home country of Germany.
Though Gnabry has now played for four different clubs since he last started a game for Arsenal, he’s been back in the headlines in the English media lately after Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash with Liverpool.
The winger has nine goals and seven assists for his current side this season and has become a key part of their team, leaving Gunners fans wondering how he got away. The player himself spoke to the media to confirm it was his decision to leave, in the end, but he felt it was one he had to make to play regularly.
“In my heart, I wanted to stay,” Gnabry told ESPN. “I always believed that I had what it takes to play for Arsenal, but these things are not always down to you. It was a tough decision [to return to Germany] but it was a logical one. I needed to play to get ahead.” It’s a shame he felt that way, as there are plenty of examples of players who have come through the academy and received consistent first-team chances with Arsenal.
Recently, Hector Bellerin, Alex Iwobi, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have all made themselves first-team regulars after initially playing in the youth teams. There’s certainly no doubt Gnabry would’ve been playing almost every week if he’d still been around this season.
Another youngster hoping to transition from the academy to the senior side is Reiss Nelson, currently on loan with Hoffenheim. Gnabry spent some time on loan with Hoffenheim himself, and he says working under Julian Nagelsmann opened his eyes to a different side of the game.
“He pushed me to want it more on the pitch, to really go for goal,” Gnabry continued. “And he was also a real tactics freak. After games, he showed me videos, explaining that I was coming too deep and should instead look to receive the ball behind the defensive lines, that type of thing. “He really opened my eyes. I see football differently now, in a more analytical way.” Let’s hope Nelson is just as enlightened by his year away in Hoffenheim as Gnabry was.
Wenger insists Bayern Munich meddled in Serge Gnabry’s Werder Bremen transfer
Before, he was once an Arsenal man, but initially on account of a lack of playing time, the German international decided to move back to Germany, where he signed with Werder Bremen. It has long been speculated, however, that Gnabry’s decision to leave Arsenal for Bremen may not have been entirely about his minutes. Gnabry’s former coach, Arsene Wenger, the repeated theory of his own in a recent interview he gave to beIN SPORTS.
Of course, the legendary French manager did not offer any evidence, but it is an interesting theory nonetheless. Wenger went on to talk about how Gnabry, “lacked confidence in some stages” and had a “very bad experience at West Brom.”
Already in 2016, Sky Germany speculated that Gnabry would in fact sign with Bayern Munich and immediately go on loan to Werder Bremen. After the Rio Olympics, Gnabry declined to extend his contract and instead transferred to Bremen; Wenger said in January, “At the time it looked like Bayern Munich were behind it,” but he also reiterated that Arsenal had sold Gnabry, not to Bayern, but to Bremen. The circle of speculation seemed complete when Gnabry then transferred to Bayern a season later.
Arsene Wenger claims Bayern Munich ‘manipulated’ Serge Gnabry into leaving Arsenal
Gnabry – who scored four times against Tottenham in the Champions League – only had a year left on his contract when he swapped the Emirates for Werder Bremen, having made just 10 Premier League appearances for the Gunners as well as enduring a torrid loan spell at West Brom. Wenger insists he was a huge believer in Gnabry’s talent and wanted to keep him, but says Bayern played the long game to lure him away.
‘We tried to extend his contract for a very long time and I think that Bayern manipulated behind the scenes, that if he went to Bremen he would join Bayern after,’ Wenger told beIN Sports. ‘He was always a very talented boy who lacked confidence in some stages, but we always thought we had a player who could achieve a lot. ‘He came back from a very bad experience on loan at West Brom where his confidence was destroyed. I tried to rebuild him because I believed in him.’
Arsenal’s decision to let Gnabry leave was criticized in the wake of his four-goal haul in Bayern’s 7-2 demolition of Spurs, though Wenger says he now needs to maintain those levels. The Frenchman continued: ‘A top-level career is a consistency, if you look at the players that dominate our sport it’s the ones that show huge consistency and that’s what is at stake.
