When he was 41, in Feb 2009, he totaled 2070lbs at the APA “All RAW” Northwest Regional Championships in the non-drug-tested docket, setting 2 American records in the open category; thus earning his IFBB Pro Card.
In 2010, won the Mt. Olympia 2010 World’s Strongest Professional Bodybuilder, by benching 628 pounds plus deadlifting 800 lbs for a 1,428 lb push/pull total. Stan Efferding Diet
According to Efferding, no workout will help build muscle as much as having the right diet and recovery in place. Efferding makes sure that he includes enough proteins and healthy fats to build muscle mass.
Stan also takes a lot of slow-acting carbs to supply his body with enough energy for his demanding workouts.“The vast majority of people who want to get bigger and stronger already train hard enough to grow, they just don’t eat and sleep enough to grow.
They carry a notebook and want to show me every rep, and set, of every workout and routine they’ve done for the past three years. But there’s not one page with a record of their meals.”
Overall, Stan doesn’t overcomplicate his diet – just like with training. He sticks to what works for him, achieving the most progress doing it this way.
- fresh fruit (Efferding prioritizes oranges and cranberries)
- nuts
- vegetables (carrots and peppers are quite prominent)
- yogurt
- spinach
- whole eggs
- stock and bone broth
- fatty fish like salmon
- sweet potatoes
The “vertical” component of the diet is built on the premise that as your digestive system adapts and becomes more efficient, you’ll be able to take in greater quantities of other foods to increase strength and improve recovery.
Specifically, Efferding prioritizes white rice and white potatoes for carbs, and red meat like bison, steak, and lamb for protein.
Efferding’s favorite meal is his”monster mash.” This consists of ground bison, white rice, spinach, and peppers all cooked in bone broth. “It’s delicious, easy to digest, and feels great on the stomach,” he says. It’s important to note here that store-bought, packaged ground beef or bison is not the same as a whole steak in the Vertical Diet.
Efferding says consuming whole cuts of meat ensures higher quality calories—hamburger meat is often made from scraps, after all—and provides more vitamins, minerals, and fats than processed ground meat.
