You did it’: The Real Dirty Dancing stars Stephanie Rice and Jude Bolton pull off the iconic lift from the classic film in the finale – after the Olympian injured her back during rehearsals
Olympian Stephanie Rice and former AFL star Jude Bolton were able to pull off the iconic lift from the classic film Dirty Dancing during a special performance at the Enmore Theatre.
On Monday night’s finale of The Real Dirty Dancing, the 31-year-old Olympian was seamlessly lifted into the air by Jude, in order to recreate the scene from the beloved 1987 romantic drama.
Stephanie and Jude appeared overjoyed during at their performance, which they completed in the 1600-seat venue in Sydney’s inner west.
The swimming star wore an almost identical dress to Jennifer Grey, which was a frilled pink dress which hugged her athletic figure.
While Jude wore the iconic black trousers and t-shirt for the performance, similar to the ones donned by the beloved late actor Patrick Swayze in the film.
‘You did it,’ host of the mini-series Todd McKenney said, as he and co-host Kim Johnson-Herjavec gave them an embrace after the lift. It was a triumphant moment for the pair, who suffered a number of setbacks while practicing the iconic lift including a back injury for Stephanie.
Earlier in the show, Stephanie awkwardly landed on her back and head while practicing at a circus school together in Sydney.
Stephanie attempted to leap into Jude’s arms only for him to drop her on the ground with her hitting her back and head. ‘I hear the thud of her head against the floor. I thought I had concussed her,’ Jude said after the incident.
Following the fall, Stephanie said: ‘We over-rotated. I smashed my back straight on the floor. It hurt so bad. I feel like this was a major back-step on my behalf.’
The Olympian went on to say she hid the injury from Jude, as to not shake his confidence: ‘I don’t want Jude to know that it’s hurting,’ she said. He would be a bit more self-doubting and a bit more concerned,’ she added.
The finale was an end to the four-part mini-series, which saw a number of celebrities come together to raise money for research for the Pancare Foundation.
The series saw Hugh Sheridan, Firass Dirani, Anna Heinrich, Anne Edmonds and Jessica Rowe perform some of the film’s iconic dances.
