Steve Earle Career
He began learning the guitar at the age of 11 and entered a school talent contest at age 13. At the age of 14, he ran away from home to go in search of his idol, singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. As a youngster, he was rebellious and at the age of 16, he dropped out of school.
He relocated to Houston in the company of his 19-year-old uncle, who was also a musician. He finally met Van Zandt while in Houston. At the age of 19, in 1974 Earle moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Here he began working blue-collar jobs during the day and playing music at night. During this period he wrote songs and played bass guitar in Guy Clark’s band and sang on Clark’s 1975 album Old No. 1.
He appeared in the 1975 film Heartworn Highways, a documentary on the Nashville music scene that included Guy Clark, Townes van Zandt, David Allan Coe, and Rodney Crowell. For several years, Earle lived in Nashville and presumed the position of staff songwriter at the publishing company Sunbury Dunbar. Later he returned to Texas where he started a band called The Dukes.
Earle returned to Nashville in the 1980s and worked as a songwriter for the publishers Roy Dea and Pat Carter. A “When You Fall in Love”, which he co-wrote was recorded by Johnny Lee and made number 14 on the country charts in 1982. Carl Perkins recorded his song “Mustang Wine”, and two of his songs were recorded by Zella Lehr.
Later Dea and Carter made a free record name called LSI and welcomed Earle to start recording his very own material on their name. In 1985, Connie Smith recorded Earle’s composition “A Far Cry from You” which reached a minor position on the country charts as well.
He released an EP called, Pink & Black, in 1982 featuring the Dukes. John Lomax who was acting as Earle’s manager, “sent the EP to Epic Records,” and in 1983, they signed Earle to a recording contract. Again in 1983, he signed a record deal with CBS and recorded a “neo-rockabilly album”.
After losing his publishing contract with Dea and Carter, he met producer Tony Brown he obtained a seven-record deal with MCA Records. Earle released Guitar Town, in 1986 on MCA Records. This was his first full-length album. His 1990 album The Hard Way had a strong rock sound and was followed by another album called Shut Up and Die Like an Aviator.
With his extreme increase in drug use, MCA Records did not renew his contract and Earle didn’t record any music for the next four years. Earle’s former manager, John Dotson, together with two staff members at Warner/Chappell publishing company, created an in-house CD of Earle’s songs in 1994, entitled Uncut Gems and showcased it to some recording artists in Nashville.
Following this, several of Earle’s songs being recorded by Travis Tritt, Robert Earl Keen, and Stacy Dean Campbell. Two years later, Earle formed his own record label, E-Squared Records, and released the album, I Feel Alright, which consolidated the musical hints of rock, country, and rockabilly. In 1997, he released the album El Corazon (The Heart) which one reviewer called “the capstone of this [Earle’s] remarkable comeback”.
He composed the song “Over Yonder” about a death row prisoner with whom he exchanged letters before going to his execution in 1998. He made a swooped into bluegrass influenced music in 1999 when he released the album The Mountain with the Del McCoury Band. Earle recorded his album Transcendental Blues, in 2000, which features the song Galway Girl.
In 2010 he was awarded the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty’s Shining Star of Abolition award. Additionally, Earle has recorded two other anti-death punishment melodies: “Billy Austin”, and “Ellis Unit One” for the 1995 film Dead Man Walking. He appeared in seasons 1 and 2 of the HBO show Treme in 2010 -2011 as Harley Wyatt, a talented street musician who mentors another character.
He released his first novel and fourteenth studio album, both entitled I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive after a Hank Williams song, in the spring of 2011. On April 26, 2011, the album was produced by T Bone Burnett and released. It manages inquiries of mortality with a “more country” sound than his previous work.
During the second half of his 2011 visit with The Dukes and Duchesses and Moorer, the drum unit was embellished with the motto “we are the 99%” a reference to the Occupy development of September 2011.
Earle released his sixteenth studio album, on February 17, 2015, named Terraplane. Still, on September 10, that same year, Earle & the Dukes released a new internet single titled “‘ Mississippi, It’s Time”. On June 10, 2016, he released an album of duets with Shawn Colvin, titled simply Colvin And Earle, which was accompanied by a tour in London and the U.S.
The following year, Earle & the Dukes released his seventeenth studio album, So You Wannabe An Outlaw GUY. On March 29, 2019, his tribute album to his songwriting hero Guy Clark was released.
Earle recorded a duet with Shawn Colvin titled Colvin and Earle in 2017. The New York Times Magazine listed hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire on June 25, 2019, and Steve Earle was among them. He was one of five artists who filed a class-action lawsuit against Universal on June 21, in response to an earlier Times report on the fire.
