In the spring of 1982, a young football player from Parkway North High School in St. Louis committed to play for the Bearcats. Steve Savard would end up being one of the greatest linebackers to ever put on a Northwest uniform. Savard made an immediate impact in his first campaign, leading the team in interceptions.
He went on to be a cornerstone piece that helped transform the Bearcat football program. In his first few years, they fought to reach the .500 mark but eventually, they won an MIAA title and earned a trip to the 1984 playoffs, the first-ever bid to the NCAA D-II playoffs for the program.
Savard went on to imprint his name all over the record books, leading the team in tackles three times during his career – including 142 tackles in 1984 ranking as the sixth-best mark in school history, and 146 tackles in 1985 which ranks second all-time.
