Stone Gossard is an American musician and songwriter born in Seattle, Washington, United States. He serves as the rhythm guitarist for the rock band Pearl Jam. Along with Jeff Ament, Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder, he is one of the founding members of the band.
Gossard is furthermore known for his work before Pearl Jam with the Seattle-based grunge bands Green River and Mother Love Bone. Gossard was also a member of the bands Temple of the Dog and Brad.

Gossard was born on July 20, 1966, in Seattle, Washington, United States to David W. Gossard Jr. and Mary Carolyn Carpenter. His father was a lawyer while his mother functioned in the Seattle city government. Gossard went to the Northwest Boarding School in Seattle. The first band Gossard joined was March of Crimes, a band of which future Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd was a member, as was novelist Jonathan Evison. Although Gossard’s time with the band was short, it taught him about the emerging music scene in Seattle.
Gossard began a close friendship with fellow guitarist (and future Mudhoney member) Steve Turner, who also had attended the Northwest School, and entered Turner in his band The Ducky Boys. Turner’s interest in punk rock had an important influence on Gossard and in turn on the ethos of the band.
Rise to Fame and Breakthrough Moment
One of the originators of the “Seattle Music Scene”, Stone began in a band called The Ducky Boys and subsequently became one of the founding members of Green River with existing bandmate Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam. He was furthermore a member of Mother Love Bone up until the sad demise of Andrew Wood from a heroin overdose.
