Williams is an astronaut, United States Navy officer, and former NASA record-holder for the most spacewalks by a woman. She has been on four space missions and has logged over 32 hours in spacewalks. She is currently training for her fifth space mission, the Boeing Starliner Crew Flight Test, which will be the first crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. She finished helicopter pilot training and was assigned to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 3 in Norfolk, Virginia.
She deployed to the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and flew combat missions in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. She also flew humanitarian missions in support of Operation Provide Comfort in Somalia in 1992 and Hurricane Andrew relief efforts in Florida in 1992. Williams was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1998. She completed two years of astronaut training and was assigned to her first space mission, STS-116, in 2002.
