After graduation, Orman relocated to Berkeley, California, where she served as a waitress. In 1980, she lent $52,000 from friends to open a restaurant. As an investment novice, she invested that money through a representative at Merrill Lynch but later lost her entire investment in trading options.
Orman later educated herself as an account executive for Merrill Lynch. She learned how to invest. After completing her training with Merrill Lynch, she continued with the firm until 1983. Orman moved on to become a vice president of investments at Prudential Bache Securities.
After Orman resigned from Prudential in 1987, she founded the Suze Orman Financial Group, in Emeryville, California. She remained the director of the firm until 1997. In 2002, The Suze Orman Show started airing on CNBC.
Later in February 2008, Orman donated copies of her book Women and Money for free after being featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She created over two million downloads.
In 2016, Orman was delegated as the official Personal Finance Educator for the United States Army and Army Reserve. Later in 2018, Suze started working as a Special Advocate for the National Domestic Violence Hotline, to help spread awareness regarding financial abuse.
