Early Life, Education, and Career Beginning 

Dimitriades was born and brought up in Earlwood, a suburb of Sydney. Alex’s parents divorced when he was 12 years old. His mother worked as a legal secretary. She raised the children as a single mother. In September 2009, his mother, Betty Dimitriades, lost her battle with a long-time illness. Alex graduated from Sydney Technical High School.

He started his acting career in the film The Heartbreak Kid, he starred in a television spin-off, Heartbreak High, in which he played Nick Poulos.

Dimitriades is best known for her roles in Head On (1998), Ghost Ship (2002) and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (2005). He first attracted national attention for his co-starring role in the 1993 Australian film The Heartbreak Kid, for which he received positive reviews and acclaim.

• Alex made his acting debut in the film The Heartbreak Kid, he starred in a television spin-off, Heartbreak High, in which he played Nick Poulos. He continued on to play underworld figure, Warren Lanfranchi, in the 1995 drama television series Blue Murder.  He took on a role in the police drama Wildside in 1997.
• He appeared in Young Lions in 2002. Years which followed, he had small guest roles in the Australian soap Neighbours and the science fiction series Farscape. Alex played assassin Victor Brincat (known as Mr. T or ‘The Running Man’ in the show) in the drama series Underbelly in 2008 .
• Alex featured in The Slap, the TV adaptation of the novel of the same name by Christos Tsiolkas in 2011. He was awarded the AACTA Award for Best Lead Actor in a Television Drama for his role as the protagonist, Harry.
• Alex starred in The Principal in 2015 , a SBS four-part crime drama screened over two weeks in October, for which he won a Logie Award. The series received positive reviews and various accolades, including several nominations from the Australian Film Institute in 2016. Prior to this, he appeared in the shows Secret City and Seven Types of Ambiguity.
• Alex had a recurring role in the BBC One drama The Cry, as Detective Peter Alexiades; in late 2018 and in the Netflix series Tidelands, again playing a police officer.
