Neuwirth was born on December 31, 1958, in Newark, New Jersey, United States to her mother Sydney Anne, and her father Lee Paul Neuwirth. She grew up with her older brother Peter. Neuwirth began taking ballet lessons at five, a year after viewing a production of The Nutcracker with her mother.
However, after viewing the musical Pippin in Manhattan at 13, she changed her plans from becoming a ballerina to being a Broadway musical dancer. After graduating from Princeton High School in 1976, Neuwirth went to the Juilliard School for dance and dropped out after only a year, disliking the school for not having Broadway-style dance training.
