Varela was born on December 29, 1972, in Santiago, Chile. She is the daughter of Leonor Palma-Keller, a massage therapist, and Francisco Varela García, a biologist and cognitive neuroscientist.

She has a sister named Alejandra and two brothers named Javier and Gabriel. When Varela was a child, her family fled Chile after the 1973 military coup d’état.

In the early 1980s, her parents moved back to Chile while she remained in Paris where she studied acting at the Niels Arestrup School, L’École du Passage, and Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris.

Varela starred as Cleopatra in Cleopatra. Cleopatra was a 1999 miniseries adaptation of Margaret George’s 1997 historical fiction novel The Memoirs of Cleopatra. Produced by Hallmark Entertainment, it stars Timothy Dalton as Julius Caesar, Varela as the Egyptian queen Cleopatra, Rupert Graves as Octavius, Billy Zane as Mark Antony, Sean Pertwee as Brutus, and Bruce Payne as Cassius.
