Rowell was born on May 10, 1959, in Portland, Maine, United States to her father Wilson, and her mother Dorothy Rowell. When she was 16 days old, Rowell, along with her two sisters, Lori and Sheree, were surrendered to child services.
Rowell grew up on a 60-acre working farm in Maine with foster parents Agatha C. and Robert Armstead, and learned classical ballet from a book. Rowell finally turned professional and performed with ABT (American Ballet Theater) II and other professional ballet groups.
Rowell rose to fame in 1990, after she was cast as Drucilla Barber, a street urchin-turned-ballet dancer on the CBS daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless. In Rowell’s biography ‘The Women Who Raised Me’ she disclosed that at the age of seven her biological mother came to visit her at her foster home but she was never introduced as her mother.
Dorothy was housed at Maine Insane Hospital in Maine where she spent portions of her adult life. In 1999 Rowell made a trip to the asylum so that she could relive her mother’s memory.
Rowell has a brother and two sisters; Sheree Rowell and Lori Rowell. They were all brought up in foster homes as their mother could not take care of them since she had schizophrenia. The three of them were put under the care of Agatha Armstead and her husband Robert.
Rowell is divorced. She was first married to Tom Fahey, an American Cinematographer. The couple married in 1989 and divorced in 1990. They had a daughter known as Maya Fahey. Rowell had a long-term relationship with musician Wynton Marsalis, a famous American trumpeter and composer. Together they had a son named Jasper Armstrong Marsalis.
