Bird was born on 16 October 1980, in Syosset, New York, United States. She attended Syosset High School where she played her freshman and sophomore years though liked more competition. Thereafter, Sue attended Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York. Her visit here traversed for a period of two seasons. In the second season, her team came out undefeated winning the New York state championship, and the national title.
She took part in the WBCA High School All-America Game, where she scored 11 points. For her college studies, she went to the University of Connecticut (Uconn) because it was her favorite but it was near her home. In her junior year, Bird got to play “the best women’s basketball game ever played” against Notre Dame.”. The game was commemorated in a book, Bird at the Buzzer, in which Bird took the nominative shot at the buzzer to win the game.
