Homa Bay town constituency Member of Parliament Kaluma maintained his seat after winning in the Tuesday Election. Kaluma who vied on an ODM ticket polled 24, 885 to beat 6 competitors was declared the winner by Gregory Ouko, the constituency returning officer.

In Homa Bay parliamentary race, Miyare George Ouma, an independent candidate came second with 8, 429 votes followed by Ocholla Noah. Other candidates included Humphery Odhiambo, Adede Otieno, Mbuya Onyango, and Ogindo Martin.

Peter Kaluma Suspects

However, Police in Homa Bay on Wednesday night arrested five people found in possession of weapons around two tallying centers. The suspects were allegedly planning to disrupt the tallying process in Homa Bay and Kabondo Kasipul constituencies.

In Homa Bay town, four men were walking around the County Governor’s office armed with knives and a club when they were intercepted by police officers.

The office of Kaluma is regardless a few meters away from Tom Mboya University which is the county tallying center. According to Homa Bay County Police Commander, Sammy Kosgei, the men were walking around the premises before they were encountered by the police. ‘The men were intercepted 500 meters away from the county tallying center. It is an offense to carry weapons in public and so we had to apprehend them,” he confirmed.

Kaluma was employed at Lumumba & Mumma Advocates as a Pupilage from 2000 to 2001 and then repositioned to B. M. Musau & Co. Advocates founded in Nairobi as an associate between 2002 and 2003. He went back to Lumumba, Mumma & Kaluma Advocates as a partner from 2004 to 2012.

Nonetheless, in 2009, he operated at Kenya School of Law and Kabarak University as a lecturer till 2012. Between 2011 and 2012, he also operated as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. Junet Mohamed Campaign

Mohamed said his leadership would be all-inclusive and acceptable to all constituents to move ahead together. Coming from a ‘minority’ community and vying against an incumbent, he was aware he ought to stage an effective campaign to attract many people.

The MP guaranteed his campaign was coordinated by people from all parts of the constituency to make them own the process. “The constituents had to come up with what they wanted the MP to do for them,” Mohamed said adding that he formed a number of campaign teams in every location.

Junet Mohamed Career

Mohamed was previously the Councilor for Migori town having been appointed in 2003. His official political career began in 2013 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Suna East with the ODM party ticket. 

He became the first Kenyan Somali to be elected Member of the National Assembly in Nyanza Province and to be precise Migori county. Although he is a former Migori town Mayor, having been nominated as a councilor in 2003, Mohamed rose to become the first MP of the new Suna East constituency, in Nyanza.

In the nominations, the MP beat strong candidates including former area MPs Owino Likowa and John Pesa, to win the Orange Democratic Movement party ticket. And in the General Election, in 2013 beat a host of candidates, to grab the seat, hived off from the former Migori constituency.

Talking after he was announced the winner, he said, unlike most parliamentary candidates who won on the basis of their clans, he had an all-inclusive campaign team. He said his leadership would be all-inclusive and acceptable to all constituents to move ahead together. Coming from a ‘minority’ community and vying against an incumbent, he was aware he ought to stage an influential campaign to attract many people.
