Willie Watson Old Crow Medicine Show
Watson met the future co-founder of Old Crow Medicine Show Ketch Secor after they finished high school in New Hampshire. He enrolled in Ithaca College following his band’s disbandment in Virginia. Secor brought a friend and former bandmate Chris “Critter” Fuqua up to New York State from Virginia.
While the three assembled musicians around Ithaca, New York, Watson dissolved The Funnest Game. According to Mac Benford, Ithaca had for 40 years been a center of old-time music, nationally, including Kevin Hayes:5 They recorded Trans: mission, a cassette of ten songs they could sell on the road.
In October 1998, the group left Ithaca for their Trans: mission tour, busking west across Canada. They circled back east in the Spring of 1999 and moved into a farmhouse on Beech Mountain, near Boone, North Carolina. They were embraced by the Appalachian people group, and their collection of old-time songs developed as they played with neighborhood artists.
Watson performed with the group, composing and singing a large number of their increasingly prominent songs. He left to embark on a solo career in the autumn of 2011, a couple of months before Fuqua rejoined the group, citing time on the road, new parenthood, and direction the band was headed as reasons for the split.

Watson’s transition to solo appearances began slowly with an invitation from siblings Sean and Sara Watkins to go along with them on a Cayamo cruise—a vocalist lyricist, people, rootsy celebration on a ship around the Bahamas. Sean took the liberty to put Watson on the exhibition plan.
Watson began appearing in venues in 2012–2013, in and around Venice Beach, California, making appearances with the Reilly band, John C. and John Prine. He was initially, performing original music, then he later saw he got increasingly out of playing out the old songs and his crowd appeared to appreciate them more.
