Early Life and Education

Gumbel was born on 29 September 1948, in New Orleans. He is the son of Rhea Alice (née LeCesne), a city clerk, and Richard Dunbar Gumbel, a judge. Gumbel’s paternal great-great-grandfather was a German-Jewish expatriate from the village of Albisheim. Brought up Catholic, he went and graduated from De La Salle Institute in Chicago while growing up on the South Side of the city; his family had shifted north when he was a child.

He then graduated from Bates College in 1970 with a degree in Russian history. He was one of four siblings, including two sisters and an older brother, Greg Gumbel, who also became a nationally acknowledged sports broadcaster.

Gumbel joined Today in 1982 as the show’s first Black host and became known as “never stumble Gumbel” for his exacting standards. The image shown to the viewers wasn’t always how things played out off-screen, however.

In 1985, after the purchase of ESPN by the American Broadcasting Company, Vitale also began broadcasting on the ABC network.
