Tamela began her career in a group with the group in the 90s. Her experience with them brought her to the limelight and she later got spotted in the movie stakeholders. Together with the Kirk Franklin group, they led to her acting career and also her solo music career.
She later left the gospel group and she appeared in He Say…She Says…But What Does God Say? by David E. Talbert. She debuted her first stage play I Can Do Bad All By Myself in 1999 when she was discovered by Tyler Perry.
