Tee Grizzley New Songs
Arriving at #10 is “INTRO,” the first single from DaBaby’s second studio album, Kirk. DaBaby has been prolific since his first mixtape, Nonfiction, in 2015. Two mixtapes in 2015. Two in 2016. A full six in 2017. Then two more in 2018. That pace hasn’t slowed since joining Interscope and South Coast Music Group. DaBaby’s first studio album, Baby on Baby, came out March 1st, 2019. The hard work paid off as Baby on Baby went to #7 on the Billboard 200, #3 on the R&B/HH chart, and #2 in rap.
Of the four singles Dababy has released in 2019, “INTRO” is the second to crack the R&B/HH top 10. Debuting at #39 is Lil Mosey’s “Stuck in a Dream.” Only 17 years old and from Washington state, Mosey has accrued quite the acclaim. On Instagram, he has 2.8 million followers. Like many of the rising stars from the last few years, Mosey’s music originally gained momentum through singles released on SoundCloud.
“Stuck in a Dream” is Mosey’s fourth single in 2019 but the first to land on the R&B/HH chart. At #39, “Stuck in a Dream” places one below the peak of Mosey’s most successful single, 2018’s “Notice.”24KGoldn seized the #42 spot with “Valentino.” While Lil Mosely is an example of the continued star-making power of SoundCloud, 24KGoldn highlights the ability of a more recent app. “Valentino” had initially released in February, but it enters the chart now because of TikTok, the social music app. In the last week, TikTok videos using “Valentino” have accrued millions of views. So the sudden jump to the Billboard Hot R&B/HH chart makes sense.
This is another 2019 win for 24KGoldn. His track, “Workin’,” made the official VOLTA FOOTBALL soundtrack for EA’s Fifa 20. And, last week, Gold performed at the popular Rolling Loud festival. Our last new entry for this week is “Satish” by Tee Grizzley, sneaking in at #48. “Satish” addresses the attempted drive-by murder of Tee Grizzley that he survived but claimed the life of his aunt, Jobina Brown. He characterizes Detroit with the line, “In my city, if you winnin’, you can’t stay…They say they love us/but that love might be hate.” Perhaps the most heartbreaking line: “They took my heart and my brains, n****s known I can’t think.” Brown was also Grizzley’s manager.
The tragedy undercuts the impressive ascendancy of Tee Grizzley since being released from prison in 2016. His first two studio albums, Activated and Scriptures, both cracked the top 20 of the Billboard top 200, at #10 and #20, respectively. And he was nominated for Best New Hip Hop Artist at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.
This is Lizzo’s sixth week at #1. “Truth Hurts” seems, for the time being, indomitable. The fall of Lil Nas X’s “Panini” from #2 to #4 allowed “Ran$om” by Lil Tecca to reach #2 (from #3) and “No Guidance” by Chris Brown to go from #4 to #3.#5-#9 remains unchanged: “Goodbyes” (Post Malone), “Old Town Road” (Lil Nas X), “Talk” (Khalid), “Sunflower” (Post Malone & Swae Lee), and “Money in the Grave” (Drake).
The only newcomer was DaBaby’s “INTRO.”
King of the mountain
The world belongs to “Sunflower,” we’re all just living in it. 49 weeks on the R&B/HH chart is impressive. Will it still be in the top 10 come the one year anniversary? The answer is probably “yes,” as, at this point, I’m convinced the song will be on the chart for the rest of the time.
