After a summer internship at the newspaper in 1979 and 1980, Wilbon started working for the Washington Post in 1980. He covered college sports, Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association before being promoted to a full-time journalist in February 1980. His column in the Post, which dealt with the culture of sport as much as the action on the court.
Wilbon has covered ten Summer and Winter Olympic Games for The Washington Post in his career, every Super Bowl since 1987, almost every Final Four since 1982, and every year since 1987 the NBA Finals.
Wilbon was also the only reporter outside Hawaii to cover the historic basketball upset of top-ranking Virginia by then-NAIA member Chaminade in 1982 (he was in Honolulu covering a college bowl game).
Wilbon earned a name during his time at the Post as one of “the best writer in American newspapers.” In 2001, the Society of Professional Journalists named him the top sports journalist. He has become known more like an ESPN personality in recent years than as a reporter. He wrote his last Washington Post column on December 7, 2010, and officially devoted full-time work to ESPN and ABC.
