Nightingale did her first broadcast on BBC on 14 September 1963. She was a panelist on Juke Box Jury, she also contributed to Woman’s Hour later in 1964. She has hosted programs on the BBC Light Programme in 1966. Annie first started doing a Sunday evening show at Radio 1 on 5 October 1969 then later hosted the singles review show known as What’s New in the early 1970s before she graduated to a late-night progressive rock show which was simulcast on the Radio 2 FM frequency.
Nightingale has also presented a Sunday- afternoon request show in the mid- and late 1970’s while in the early 1980’s she presented a Friday night show and the non-music-based Radio 1 Mailbag and Talkabout. Nightingale became the main presenter of The Old Grey Whistle Test on BBC 2 in 1978 as a replacement for long-time host Bob Harris.
During her incumbency, the show moved from its traditional bias under Harris towards country music, blues rock, and progressive rock and adopted popular modern styles such as punk rock and new wave. She later left the series in 1982. Aside from The Old Grey Whistle Test show, she had also begun presenting for The Sunday Request Show back in September 1975. The show first lasted till the end of 1979 airing on Sunday afternoons.
It later began its second and most famous run in December 1982 having most of its run in a slot immediately after the Top 40. The show became one of the first on British radio to regularly play music from CDs, having the advantage of its FM carriage before Radio 1 had its own higher-quality frequencies. A stunt was to allow the intro of the first song in the show to play uninterruptedly before saying “Hi” in the very last second before the vocals started.
Nightingale moved to a weekend overnight dance music show in 1994 which was initially called The Chill Out Zone. She is still heard occasionally in the early hours of Wednesday mornings on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Currently, she spins breaks, often featuring major breaks DJs such as Plump DJs, Freestylers, Noisia, and Meat Katie. She regularly DJs live at clubs and festivals around the UK and Europe.
