Walz was born on 6 April 1964, in West Point, Nebraska. He is the son of Darlene Rose Reiman, a homemaker, and James F. Walz, a teacher, school superintendent, and US Army veteran who served in the Korean War. His great-grandfather John Friederich Walz was a farmer and the son of German immigrant Sebastian Walz
