Caray attended and graduated from Parkway West High School. He then enrolled at the University of Georgia, from where he graduated with a degree in Journalism in 1987.
He began his journalism career working at local television stations based in Panama City, Florida, and Greensboro, North Carolina. From 1989 to 1996, he was the play-by-play broadcaster for the Orlando Magic of the NBA.

Chip began working for the Chicago Cubs in the year 1998 as a broadcaster alongside his grandfather Harry Caray. After his grandfather’s death in February 1998, he took over his grandfather’s place as “the voice of the Cubs”.
He proceeded to work as an announcer for seven seasons, alongside Steve Stone, who worked as the color commentary for most of those years. The duo left the Cubs booth in 2004 after the season.
