Teresa Earnhardt’s Husband’s Death, Dale Earnhardt’s Death
On the afternoon of February 18th, 2001, American auto racing driver and team owner Dale Earnhardt was killed instantly in a final lap collision in the Daytona 500, in which he crashed into a retaining wall after making contact with Sterling Marlin and Ken Schrader. Dale’s death was pronounced at the nearby Halifax Medical Center. At the time of the crash, he was 49 years old.
His funeral was held four days later at the Calvary Church in Charlotte North Carolina. Dale was the fourth NASCAR driver killed by a basilar skull fracture during an eight-month span, following Adam Petty in May 2000, Kenny Irwin Jr. in July 2000, and Tonny Roper in October 2000. Dale’s death seen a live stream broadcast with more than 17 million viewers, was highly publicized and resulted in various safety improvements in NASCAR auto racing.
After Dale’s death, NASCAR began an intensive focus on safety that has seen the organization mandate the use of head and neck restraints oversee the installation of safer barriers at oval tracks, set rigorous new inspection rules for seats and seat belts, develop a roof hatch escape system and the Car of Tomorrow which eventually led to the development of a next-generation race built with extra driver safety in mind.
Teresa Earnhardt, Inc.
Teresa headed Dale Earnhardt, Inc. DEI during four Busch Series championships in 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2005 plus two Craftsman Truck Series championships in 1966 and 1998. Her first Daytona 500 win as a team owner occurred when the driver of the No. 15 Chevrolet driven by Michael Waltrip won at the 2001 race. The win, however, was overshadowed by her husband’s death in a car crash during the final lap of the race.
Teresa’s stressed relationship with her stepson Dale Earnhardt Jr. ended in May 2007 when he announced he would not be returning to DEI fro the 2008 season after an agreement could not be reached that suited himself and his three siblings who claim an equal right to the business. In 2006, Teresa hired entertainment executive Max Siegel as President of Global Operations to help DEI expand into the entertainment industry. On July 25th, 2007, DEI purchased Ginn Racing.
Teresa was unable to hold the sponsorships of Budweiser and the U.S. Army, who pulled support followed the exit of Earnhardt Jr. This was a major factor leading to the race merge with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates in November 2008 that formed Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. In 2010, the team won the Daytona 500 with Jamie McMurray. In 2014, Teresa’s ownership of the EGR team was absorbed by Ganassi which reverted the name back to Chip Ganassi Racing.
When chip Ganassi was asked why the team unleashed her, he replied ”Teresa was good to partner but she was no longer there. So I just bought her share of the team and reverted the name.” Dale Earnhardt Inc. continues to operate in Mooresville, NC, as the parent company of the varied Earnhardt business, and Teresa works to continue her late husband’s legacy through the work of the Dale Earnhardt Foundation.
