At a young age, Müller began playing football for TSV Pähl before deciding to join local Bundesliga side Bayern Munich in 2000 at the age of 10. At Bayern, he went through the youth system and in 2007, he was part of the team that was runners up in the Under 19 Bundesliga.

In March 2008, he replaced Stephan Fürstner in a Regionalliga match against SpVgg Unterhaching and made his debut for the reserve team and also scored in the match. Still with U-19 team, Muller made two more Regionalliga appearances in the 2007–08 season.

By the 2008-09 season, the third division of football in Germany, 3. Liga, was formed and Bayern’s second string qualified for it. Being part of the team, Müller was a key player as he participated in 32 out of 38 matches, scoring 15 times. This made him the fifth top scorer of the league as well as earned him a spot in the first-team under then manager Jürgen Klinsmann.

He made his first-team breakthrough in the 2009–10 season after signing his first contract for the senior team in February 2009. The contract was based on a two-year deal beginning that season.

Under the newly appointed manager, Louis van Gaal, Müller was a regular substitute and was named the Bundesliga Player of the Month of September after scoring twice in their match against Borussia Dortmund 12 September 2009 and another brace three days later in a Champions League victory over Maccabi Haifa. His namesake Gerd Müller, legendary former Bayern and Germany striker also praised Muller for his performances.

The two braces also earned him a spot at the starting squad for almost every match and only missing one match. He signed a new contract with Bayern in February 2010 that would keep him at the club till 2013. He continued to be on the starting XI in a central striking position due to the availability of Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben, other wide players.

He finished his first season as a first-team player with 52 matches played and 19 goals in all competitions. Fellow professionals voted  him as the best newcomer of the 2009–10 season and he was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

At the start of the 10/11 season, Muller signed another contract extension to keep him at Bayern until 2015 and had his first match on 7 August while his first goal in that season was scored on 27 November in a 4–1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

He was named man of the match in their first DFB-Pokal game in the 11/12 season after earning two penalties which were converted by Mario Gómez and Bastian Schweinsteiger and he added a third in the closing stages to secure a 3–0 victory over Eintracht Braunschweig.

He then had his first league goal after 5 matches in a game against Schalke 04 in Bayern’s 2–0 win. He even got on FIFA Ballon d’Or award’s shortlist that year. He played his 100th Bundesliga game on 31 March 2012 against 1. FC Nürnberg.

On 19th December 2012, Müller signed yet another contract extension, two years long, keeping him at the Allianz Arena until 2017. He had quite a good season that ended with him having netted 23 goals overall in the season (13 in the Bundesliga, one in the Pokal, an impressive eight in the Champions League and one in the 2012 DFL-Supercup which Bayern won 2–1). He began his 13/14 season on a good note by netting in seven of Bayern’s 12 pre-season games before his first competitive match which was against Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup. He had a good run in that season as he finished as the 2014 DFB-Pokal tournament’s top scorer with eight goals in five appearances, played in 31 league matches with 13 goals, and had five goals in 12 Champions League matches.

At the beginning of the 2014–15 season, Müller signed a new contract to keep him at Bayern until 2019 as he rejected a contract offer from Manchester United. He was part of Bayern’s team that played in the club’s first match in the DFL-Supercup but they lost the game. On 17th August 2014, he scored his first goal of the season in the DFB-Pokal and scored another goal in the Bundesliga on 22 August 2014 against VfL Wolfsburg.

He signed a new contract with Bayern on 18 December 2015. This contract is to last till 2021. He did have some struggle in the 2016-17 season which he ended with five goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances, no goals in three German Cup appearances, and three goals in nine Champions League appearances. Some football experts blamed manager Carlo Ancelotti for Müller’s struggles as he preferred Thiago Alcântara as the player playing behind the striker, Müller’s prime position.

He began his 2018–19 season by starting in the German Super Cup and was substituted at the 64th minute by Leon Goretzka. He also scored in the first two matchdays in the Bundesliga season, in the second round of the German Cup against SV Rödinghausen and had two goals on 24 November 2018 in the Bundesliga against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Müller joined the Germany football team at the U-16 level in 2004 and earned a call up to the U-21 team in August 2009. He debuted for the under-21s in a 3–1 friendly defeat against Turkey. In October 2009, Germany national team manager Joachim Löw, publicly considered Müller for a call-up due to his regular appearances for Bayern’s first team.

The consideration was faced with initial reluctance from the Bayern Munich board and the following month Müller was named in the squad for a friendly against the Ivory Coast. He was however called back into the under-21s as a result of less opportunity to try out new players, and with the under-21 team facing crucial qualifiers for the 2011 European Championship.

In January 2010, he was back with the senior squad for a training session in Sindelfingen and was named in the squad for a friendly against Argentina in March.

Alongside seven other Bayern Munich players, Müller was named in Germany’s provisional 27-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the final cut of 23 players for the tournament. He got allocated the number 13 jersey, that he still wears, which was previously worn by their injured captain Michael Ballack and formerly by his namesake, German legend Gerd Müller.

He started in Germany’s World Cup campaign first game and scored the third goal – his first internationally and won Germany’s goal of the month award in the process. He also played in all of their group games, as Germany finished top of Group D. The tournament ended with Germany taking bronze medals and Müller having netted five goals, a joint top goalscorer of the tournament.

From the FIFA 2010 World Cup, he earned the Golden Boot for his goals and his three assists. He also won the Best Young Player Award over fellow nominees André Ayew of Ghana and Giovani dos Santos of Mexico. He was also named on the FIFA Ballon d’Or award shortlist in October 2010 along with four of his Germany teammates.

On 22 March 2013, he his first World Cup qualifying goals in a 3–0 away win over Kazakhstan. He then scored the first hat-trick of the tournament in Germany’s opening match of the 2014 World Cup on 16 June 2014 and was named man of the match in a 4–0 win against Portugal. In their semi-final match against Brazil on 8th July, Müller scored the opening goal in the 7–1 thrash on Brazil. This goal was Germany’s 2,000th goal in its history.

He was named on the ten-man shortlist for FIFA’s Golden Ball award on 11 July, for the tournament’s best player. He received the Silver Boot as the tournament’s second top goalscorer with five goals and having played a major role in Germany’s World Cup triumph and was also named in the World Cup All Star XI.

He has also represented Germany in the EURO 2012, 2014 World Cup, the EURO 2016 and 2018 World Cup. He however did not score any goal in the 2018 World Cup as Germany was eliminated at the group stage.

Joachim Löw still has faith in Muller despite ‘difficult phase’ for the Germany star

The Bayern star can still be decisive despite his drop in form, according to his manager with the German national team.

Germany coach Joachim Low feels Thomas Muller is going through a “difficult phase” as he backed the forward to return to his best.

Muller, 29, has struggled to find his best form for Bayern Munich but he remains part of Low’s plans and the coach said Muller – the Golden Boot winner at the 2010 World Cup – could still play a key role for Germany.

“Although he hasn’t stuck out lately at the national team or his club, Thomas Muller is a player who gives a lot of energy and can lead and animate the youngsters,” he told a news conference.

“He still has those qualities of a great finish, of backing up. I have seen him in good form against [Borussia] Dortmund. Bayern’s players were in a good form for 60-70 minutes.

“Thomas Muller is a player who will always be able to decide matches, although he is currently going through a difficult phase.”
