Tim joined the University of Maryland in 1989. Ther he did mechanical engineering. He was always intrigued by computers. At the time he was at the University of Maryland, his father used to work for the Defense Mapping Agency.

Tim had an idea of creating game applications and selling them. He was first required to create a text editor based on the PASCAL language so that he could be able to program the game. Later on, he made the game out of the text editor itself.
This became the basis of ZZT. Tim let college mates and those around his neighborhood provide feedback. He was very much informed that it was something he could sell to other computer users.
In order to share the games, Tim looked to the shareware model. He wrote to Scott Miller of Apogee Software, Ltd., for ideas on how to distribute ZZT. He revitalized Potomac Computer Systems for selling ZZT.
