Tom Cruise is a popular American actor and was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York. He is the son of Mary Lee a special education teacher and Thomas Cruise Mapother both from Louisville, Kentucky and has three sisters. His parents divorced when he was 11 and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey.
It is here that Cruise who was at the age of 14 enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. While in high school, he developed an interest in acting and abandoned his plans of becoming a priest, dropped out of school, and at age 18 headed for New York and possible acting career. After trying several auditions he landed an appearance in 1981’s ‘Endless Love’, starring as Brooke Shields and also around the same time he got a small role in the military school drama ‘Taps’.
His performance in these films caught the attention of a number of filmmakers. He later got a role in ‘Risky Business’ a film that made Tom Cruise a highly recognizable actor.
Cruise later starred in ‘Top Gun’, a film that was termed as the highest-grossing film of 1986. He went on to star in other numerous films but in was not until 1996 that Cruise hit the big screen with two huge hits blockbuster Mission: ‘Impossible’ in which the star also produced and the highly acclaimed ‘Jerry McGuire’.These two hits led to Cruise earning a second Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for Best Actor.
